December 1
NH launches hybrid service
Newspaper Heritage and its parent company intelligen
Computer Solutions international, have announced they are to
introduce a hybrid service combining the functionality of
microfilm and convenience of a digital environment.
A mono or colour microfilm is created either from digital
files or from source documents. The digital files are then
processed via OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and
finally published online. The screenshot [below] shows the
online representation of the microfilm in operation. A
database is used to search the OCR'd data. Then either
within a company PC environment, or online as a web site, a
document link, or link to a specific page, takes the user
directly to the digitally-held version.
Main screen showing 2 invoice
pages being viewed.
The 'microfilm' strip can be seen at the foot.
Enlarged it looks like this ....

Note the page number confirmation
above the magnified frames.
With many applications in
many business sectors, the hybrid system offers the
long-term security of a microfilm backup, along with the
convenience and speed of digital access.
Several options are available in terms of the online
quality. At 300dpi a full 'print-ready' image is available.
At 72dpi a quick-reference image is displayed, but is
perfectly readable. Depending on the choice of of dpi, the
online film can represent up to over 4,000 images in one
'film'. Higher dpi versions hold less per 'film' on a
sliding scale, and of course pages take longer to load, but
there is an increase in quality. Early indications are that
some users will link a low-res frame back to their own image
store and a high-res version of the page/image.
The service is due to be fully available in Q1 2011.

Micropublishing service announced
Publishing takes many forms, with
digital-only, print and print-then-digital being the main
contenders. Prior to the advent of the internet, many
publications appeared in both print and microfilm format.
(With microfilm-based activity dropping off as the internet
prevailed.)
However as the microfilm industry has gone through something
of a re-birth in the last two years, NH is now to work with
key UK, European and worldwide partners to provide a
comprehensive micropublishing service with a difference!
Traditionally, micropublishing was achieved by microfilming
a publications pages, then duplicating the master film for
distribution. One of the services that NH will provide, is
to create an archival copy of the content, and ALSO, to make
that content available for viewing online via secure log-in.
That means for the customer, there will be the convenience
of online viewing, the satisfaction of knowing a secure copy
of the reference material is available, and an opportunity
to recover the cost of filming or duplication through
charging third-parties for access.
We are working up some example scenarios for anyone with out
of copyright material they think is suitable for the
service. This can cover content such as:
- periodicals
- serials
- magazines
- newsletters
- scientific papers
- historical papers and collections
- other collections of special interest
(e.g. manuscripts, letters)
- genealogical information (e.g. parish
records, grave registers)
- newspapers
The original material can exist in
digital, microfilm or hard-copy form, and the service is
likely to appeal to:
- libraries
- universities
- scientific or learned institutions
- archives and special collections
- historical collections
- and many others
Basically - any custodian/owner of data
keen who is keen to disseminate the content and to see their
content available to a broader audience.

August:
Libraries & Institutions win over
Publishers
Since Newspaper Heritage started operations in
early 2010, it has become apparent to us that the publishing
world does not place nearly the same (or in many cases
ANY,) emphasis on the need for preservation,
conservation or archiving of newspapers.
To that end, NH would like to embrace the library,
institution and other learned societies who are acutely
aware of the need to preserve our heritage by not only
capturing newspapers for posterity, but also making their
rich content available to a much wider audience.
Calling all Libraries, Institutions and other Learned
Organisations .... please contact:

July:
Shift of conservation/preservation emphasis
The principal of Newspaper Heritage was first
involved with rare, fragile and general printed works worth
preserving for posterity in the mid 1970's. Since that time,
there has been great academic and commercial debate over
who, what, why, when, where and how much the various
exercises would cost.
Advances in technology now allow digital preservation,
conservation and archiving, but at the same time, by their
very nature, the technology of computing introduces other
risks. (See IDMi 'Closing the Gap' 2009, by John Baker.
www.idmionline.com)
In recent years, microfilm has been certified with 500 years
archival permanence, and just in the last year, that 500
year accolade has also been applied to colour microfilm.
Co-relate that with Gartner suggesting that 5% of data can
be lost in a system or data migration project, and
non-digital storage suddenly looks to become a good
alternative strategy, or perhaps more realistically - a
complementary one.

What type of archive do you have in relation to newspapers?
Our database of publisher and non-publisher 'custodians' will
